Thoughts on Jimmy Anderson

I have had a few emails and comments in recent days, asking what I thought of the Jimmy Anderson situation at Lancashire, and whether I thought Derbyshire would/should make a move for him. I can see both sides of the argument. In an ideal world, Anderson would have been able to leave on his own terms, after 25 years with Lancashire. Madsen signs one-year red ball deal

There's good news to start a Thursday morning, as Derbyshire announce a new one-year, red ball deal for Wayne Madsen. It will be his 19th year with the club, which marks a level of loyalty rarely seen in the modern game. Madsen joined the club in 2009 and has gone on to score more than 24,000 all-format runs, including 52 centuries, establishing him very much as a modern great of both Derbyshire and the wider county game. Weekend warmer

It's been a good week. It started with media news that Shoaib Bashir has been awarded an England central contract, which has yet to be confirmed by the ECB. This would be good news for Derbyshire, if true, because they have doubtless been keeping money aside to cover the cost of his deal, 'just in case'. So Simon Hughes is the latest former player to decide to have a pop at Derbyshire, in a column in The Times this weekend. Exciting news for the winter blog!

The winter months allow me a chance to recalibrate and get my breath back after a busy summer. I'm not sure how I ever found time to work, to be honest! Between Dad stuff, things around the house and garden, walking the dogs and days out with my wife, I can certainly fill my time without any issue at all. Final words on 'Ignorantgate'

There is mounting pressure on Mickey Arthur at the moment, although he will probably be oblivious to this, being away in Canada at their ten-over competition. I'm still not expecting any change at Derbyshire, because I feel the county has backed into a corner from which it will be difficult to extricate itself. I think a few people will be surprised at the announcement of a new deal for Ross Whiteley. 'The players are getting better and better' says Mickey Arthur on a regular (too regular) basis in interviews. So while acknowledging that statistics perhaps don't give the full picture, they are the currency by which a cricketer is judged and I thought I would look at the figures for 2025 and 2026 They make interesting reading ... Season review

At the start of the summer I wrote that for Derbyshire to challenge, most of the players needed to be at, or close to their best on a regular basis. If one looks at the end of season averages, you could count those who will look back on 2026 as being their best form on the fingers of one hand. For any improvement in 2027, either the playing or coaching personnel needs to change - and that probably requires money we don't have and players better than appear to be available - or Mickey Arthur

Worcestershire v Derbyshire day 3

Worcestershire, 214 and 206 Derbyshire 88 and 157 Worcestershire won by 175 runs It seemed almost impossible that the Derbyshire second innings could be as awful as the first, but they came awfully close today. Only late and spirited resistance from Luis Reece (49) Amrit Basra (40) and Nick Potts (29) took the game into the afternoon.
